Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)
To respond to students’ academic interests as well as railway industry needs and development plans in Iran, the School of Railway Engineering (SRE) was established in 1997 at Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST). This outstanding achievement was accomplished with financial support made by the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (IR Iran Railways).
At the present time, by talented human forces and exclusive well-equipped laboratories, the SRE is achieving to become a world-leading institution and a pioneer in Railway Engineering. Furthermore, the SRE is honored to be one of the few academic institutions that holds professional conference on Railway Engineering regularly. The International Conference on Recent Advances in Railway Engineering (ICRARE) is held by participation of international railway researchers and experts in the SRE biannually. The latest conference was the 8th ICRARE that held successfully in May 2023.
The SRE has been equipped with exclusive and modern laboratory apparatuses and this has made the SRE a unique school in which innovative, ground-breaking and applied researches have been being performed continuously. The faculty members and alumni of the SRE have demonstrated their merits and excellent abilities in conducting scientific and industrial projects. In fact, multiple faculty members in the SRE are the world’s most highly cited researchers who have shown their significant influence on academia and industry by publication of several highly cited papers during the last decade. Also, some of the faculties have been meritoriously assigned to key and high-ranked appointments at IUST and Iran railway industries (such as position of IUST chancellor, IUST vice-chancellor for research and technology affairs and a chief executive officer of IR Iran Railways and etc).
In 1997, education programs started in the SRE with 100 students, admitted by passing the Iranian University Entrance Exam, in three disciplines: Railway Transportation Engineering, Railway Rolling Stock Engineering, and Railway Track & Structures Engineering. Also, the first MSc program in “Railway Electrification Engineering" started in 2001. Now, the SRE offers the following MSc programs: Railway Transportation Engineering, Railway Rolling Stock Engineering, Railway Track & Structures Engineering, Railway Electrification Engineering, Railway Safety Engineering, Railway Control and Signaling Engineering. In addition, Ph.D. programs for some of the mentioned disciplines have been offered in the SRE since 2011.
After about a quarter of a century, more than 3000 students have been admitted in the school and around 2700 students graduated successfully. Around 30 students have defended with merit and success their PhD dissertations; most of them work as a university professor, research fellow or senior engineer in academic institutes or railway companies. Track of records of the SRE alumni reveal that they are always shining in academia and industry.
To benefit from international research collaboration and knowledge exchange, the SRE has close scientific cooperation with the leading railway research and education departments around the world, including: Dresden Technical University in Germany, Sheffield University in the UK, Beijing Jiaotong University in China, Dnepropetrovsky University in Ukraine, Berlin Technical University in Germany and Concordia University in Canada.
Now, there are 31 faculty members in the SRE (4 professors, 11 associate professors and 16 assistant professors). Also, multiple research fellows perform scientific works under the supervision of the faculties. To promote and update education and research programs, the school benefits form cooperation with several casual and adjunct professors and experts from other Iran universities and international institutions.
